Jogging
June 01, 2007 -- 7:04 am
Days off. We were each given 1 day off a week. And no weekends off allowed. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were the biggest days at camp. Friday was always Olympic day (SO MUCH FUN!!, everyone LOVED Olympic day), Saturday was the last full day of camp with church services, the agape feast, and the Roman's Road walk through the 800 acres of camp. Sunday it was the entire camps responsibily to get campers gone by noon, clean, and ready for the next weeks campers to start arriving at 1. I had to restock the craft buidling. So days off were during the week. We got 24 hours off. Days off started at 5 pm, so as soon as the last class ended, I was free. I could leave camp, I stay overnights other places, I could pretty much do whatever. I had until 5 the next day to do whatever. Sometimes I would run to the Cities to pick up camp supplies, because we were expected to be kind if we happened to be in town, could we please pick up a few things, and thankyouverymuch. I had a car, but no license. My boyfriend drove my car up for me that summer. I was going to get my license that summer but that is an entirely long story. Brian's older brother worked at camp and the two of them shared a car, but when Brian found out I was bringing my car, he was jazzed, because he knew that if I wanted to get anywhere, he would have to drive me. And then he didn't have to share his brother's car. So of course we planned our days off the same.
There was 1 guy that worked at camp that summer named Rick. And he was HOT. Oh my....mmmm mmmmm mmmm. During those first two weeks the staffers were there getting camp ready, during that first day we all introduced ourselves to each other and had to tell a few random facts about ourselves. Rick mentioned that he enjoyed running and was planning on running all summer long. Camp was 2 miles from a small airport. The road was isolated and was never any traffic, perfect for jogging. Of course, not wanting to be outdone, I told Rick that I used to be a long distance runner (which, I was) and that I could sure give him a run for his money. He was intrigued and invited me to run with him, 6 am. Well, HELL YEAH!! We agreed to start meeting outside my cabin at 6. That first morning I was outside stretching by 5:50 am. I needed to make a good impression. I was all stretched and ready to go when he showed up. We were about a mile into our jog...clipping along nice and steady, when out of no where Rick just grabs me tight, stopping me abuptly. He looked intently in my eyes and said, SSSSSHHHHHHHHH!! Talk about scaring the shit out of me. I whispered to him loudly, "What are you doing?" He grabbed my hand and pulled me up the road a little bit and pointed into the woods. It was a huge brown bear. I shit you not!! He looked at me and said, "that is why you always run with me in the morning. There are bears all over these woods, and you are NOT be alone." I had a warm fuzzy feeling all over. We completely couldn't get back into our groove after that, so we instead of going all the way to the airport, we turned around and jogged slowly the rest of the way back to camp. That was an interesting way to start off the summer. But you know, that was the only time we ever ran into a bear.
The rest of the summer is filled with wonderful stories of Rick, Brian, and Ian. It was quite a summer and one I always recall with a huge smile on my face. Talk about misadventures with the male persuation. I can't wait to finish telling of the rest of my adventures that summer.
